Did you remember your Mother’s birthday today?
Today, the Solemnity of Pentecost, marks the birth of the Church. Conceived in the pierced Heart of Christ when Blood and Water poured forth on Calvary, on this feast she has come to term and is born, Our Holy Mother the Church.
So back to my original question, did you remember her birthday? Do you have a gift for her? No? Well, allow me to make a suggestion. Our Lord says there is no greater love than to lay down your life. The Church has always had those who oppose her (even on Pentecost the Apostles were accused of being drunk.) Now in our day, perhaps more than ever, loyal members of the Church are needed.
Let us renew our commitment to the Church. Timothy Cardinal Manning, co-founder of our institute, expressed this thought profoundly: “While the Spirit breathes where it will, while there is manifestly all over Christendom the stirring and the activity of the Spirit, we must acknowledge the reality of this institution. Before God Almighty we profess our faith today in that Church. It is for that we live, and for which, God willing, we would die.”
Martyrdom may not be on the agenda today, but surely all of us can deepen our filial love for the Church, she who is the fruit of the love of God for our race.
Happy Birthday, Mother Church! We love you!
